CTUpack e-Learning is online CTU Code training for those involved in the loading and unloading of CTUs, based on the Code of Practice for Packing of CTU’s.
The Introduction to the CTU Code course was developed with sponsorship from the TT Club and with the support of ICHCA. It provides an introduction to the IMO/ILO/UNECE Code of Practice (CTU Code) for packing of cargo transport units. It includes an overview of the Code’s development and objectives and direct links to the electronic version of the CTU Code are included.
As consistently evidenced by the experience of both global freight transport insurer, TT Club and the Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS) Organisation, poor CTU packing is responsible for an alarmingly high number of incidents leading to damage, loss, injuries and fatalities. Additionally, the declaration of incorrect container weight (or Gross Mass) also contributes to adverse safety conditions.
The introduction of the Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code) formulated jointly by three United Nations bodies, IMO, ILO and UNECE, and approved as non-mandatory international law, was introduced to try to improve the problem of poor CTU packing globally.
In striving for greater awareness and usage of the CTU Code in order to improve safety in the intermodal supply chain, the Cargo Integrity Group (CIG) has published its Quick Guide to the Code, and its accompanying Container Packing Checklist, in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
The five organisations (Container Owners Association, Global Shippers Forum, ICHCA, TT Club and the World Shipping Council), that are collaborating in CIG are dedicated to achieving greater levels of safety, security and environmental performance within containerised global trade. The production of a Quick Guide to the IMO/ILO/UNECE Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code), along with a Checklist of actions required of those packing cargo in freight containers, is pivotal to achieving safe and secure transport. The guides can be found in our Resources & Support section opposite.
